Image Co-Tracker Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Image Co-Tracker is a tool for creating databases of images from the Internet. It automatically captures the image, the Internet addresses where the image has been found and where it refers, its name, and the date it is added to the database. You also can assign comments and categories to images, organize them, send by e-mail, export to HTML, transfer to other computers, search, sort, print, and more.

This FAQ file discusses security issues, how to use the program, and troubleshooting.

You can always find updated FAQ at Cogitum LC Web site http://www.cogitum.com

I. General Information

Is Image Co-Tracker really free?
Image Co-Tracker is absolutely free for personal and non-commercial use only. If you wish to use Image Co-Tracker for commercial purposes, contact Cogitum LC to obtain a commercial use license. We consider "commercial" purposes to refer to any of the following circumstances:
1. If you are planning to use the product for commercial needs, including integration into your own products or systems.
2. If you are planning to use the product in your workplace for business purposes.
3. If you are planning to use this product on a business network.

Why is the program called Co-Tracker?
The "Co" in Co-Tracker has three meanings. The database, developed by Cogitum LC, is cooperative, working with you to navigate the Internet in a cognitive manner. In other words, Co-Tracker is your "smart partner" for tracking Internet information.

II. Security

Does the program collect information from the user’s computer?
No. Image Co-Tracker allows you to collect images and related information from the Internet in a relatively secure manner.

Does the using the program provide protection against viruses or unauthorized access?
Not directly. The only risks in using this program are those that are inherent in downloading any information from the Internet. Viruses are not usually transmitted through text or images, but you should take reasonable precautions to detect any that may arise. Similarly, any program working on the Internet can be subject to unauthorized access, and you should use special software (e.g., firewalls) to prevent such access.

Does the program change Microsoft Internet Explorer settings?
No.

III. Software Requirements and Limitations

Can the program work without an Internet browser?
No. Image Co-Tracker is developed to work with images within an Internet browser only. The current version of the program runs under Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher.

Is it possible to use the Image Co-Tracker database in an “off-line” mode?
Yes. You can view, sort, or find images off-line. However, to follow a link or view a page from which you have grabbed an image or a page an image refers to, you will need an Internet connection.

Does the program work with languages other than English?
Yes. The program allows you to work with languages supported by your operating system and Microsoft Internet Explorer. You can view and enter all symbols supported by the browser, and you can sort and search information in any language used in the image database.

How many images will fit in the catalog? How many catalogs and categories can be created?
There are no specific limitations on the number of images, but very large catalogs(more than 1000 images) may require substantially longer processing times, depending on your computer processor and memory.

In addition, there are no specific limitations on the number of catalogs and categories you can create. However, using more than 20 categories may be inconvenient with the current interface. To speed up the processing time for a large catalogs, it is recommended that you divide the database into categories and that each category contain fewer than 100 images.

IV. Grabbing an Image

Can I grab images saved on my computer locally?
Yes. To grab an image saved on your computer:
1. Launch Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, or switch to the Microsoft Internet Explorer window
2. Select File -> Open...
3. Click Browse...
4. Select the file type in the file type drop-down list. If you are not sure about the file type, select "All files"
5. Select the location of the file and click Open
To grab the image, follow the user manual instructions.
.

Why does clicking on certain images not do anything?
In general, clicking on an image hyperlinks you to the Web page the image refers to (i.e., the destination page). However, some images do not refer to any Internet address. The "Refers To" field is blank in this case. If you want an image to hyperlink to the Web page where you found the image (i.e., the source page), you can copy the Internet address from the "From" field and paste it to the "Refers To" field.

I was trying to grab an image when the message "It is internal script code. Do you want to resolve this reference?" appeared. What should I do?
Some images may call a script code when you are clicking on it. To provide a secure work your browser can ask you the confirmation. However it does not affect on the grabbing. It even does not matter what button you select to click in the confirmation window.

V. Catalogs and Categories

What are catalogs?
A catalog is a “folder” containing a database of images. You can create an unlimited number of catalogs at your computer. For example, you can create a catalog for family photos, a catalog for banner ads, a catalog for your own pictures, and so on.

What are categories?
Within the Image Co-Tracker database you can create specified groups of images and image-related information. For example, you might want to create special categories for banner ads, photos, comics, etc. You can define as many categories as you want. If you do not define any categories, or if you do not select a category for a particular image, Co-Tracker will use a default category, called Common. Note that the Common category cannot be deleted. Categories can be sent by e-mail, exported to HTML, transfer to other computers, printed, renamed, moved, or deleted.

What is the difference between a catalog and a category?
A catalog contains a database, and a category contains specific groups of images and image-related information within the database. For example, if you have a catalog for family photos, the categories within that catalog might include Birthday Photos, Holidays Photos, and Parents’ Photos.

What happens if I delete a category?
If a category is deleted, all Image Co-Tracker records associated with that category will be deleted. Therefore, you should look through the images before deleting the category. If you wish to retain any of them, you can simply move them to a different category.

How can I find an image catalog I saved on my computer?
Each catalog you have created or imported has an .ic extension. Use standard tools to search (e.g., Windows Explorer) for this extension (e.g., *.ic).

VI. Editing the Image Co-Tracker Records

Is it possible to change the "Date Added" and "From" fields?
No.

Are there any limitations on the length of Comment and Image Name?
No.

What is a “multiple URL”?
Some images can have multiple links. The image is divided into several zones, and each has its own URL (e.g., the map of the U.S. could have 50 URLs, one for each State). Image Co-Tracker allows you to store these multiple links and retains the “image map” that links each URL to its particular zone on the image.

Can I edit multiple URLs?
Not directly. If you edit multiple URLs, they will be replaced with the single URL you entered.

Is it possible to restore a deleted Image Co-Tracker record or category?
No. Deleted records or categories cannot be restored using Image Co-Tracker’s functionality.

VII. Transferring Image Catalogs.

Is it possible to transfer Image Co-Tracker databases to other computers?
Yes. Image Co-Tracker provides an export/import mechanism for working with your databases at other computers. As a default, Image Co-Tracker exports the current category; if you want to export the whole database, choose All Categories in the drop-down category list.

Do I need Image Co-Tracker installed at my computer to work with the database created at another computer?
Yes. You should install Image Co-Tracker and import the database you want to work with.

Can I send my database by e-mail?
Yes. Image Co-Tracker will automatically export your database file to a special format and will attach it to your message. Again, as a default, Image Co-Tracker exports the current category; if you want to export the whole database, choose All Categories in the drop-down category list.

VIII. Export to HTML

Can I hide particular fields or field names in the HTML file?
Yes. You should check off the appropriate fields in the Save As HTML File window.

IX. Image Co-Tracker Database Options

How do I set confirmation when deleting an image?
Press the Options button and check the “Confirm delete banner” box. This confirmation is set by default, and we recommend that you leave it on as a security measure.

What is the standard image size?
60 x 40 pixels. Please note this size is specified how your images are displayed. It does not affect how these images are stored.
