Troubleshooting Guide

Image Co-Tracker is a tool for creating databases of images from the Internet. It automatically captures the image, the Internet addresses where the image has been found and where it refers, its name, and the date it is added to the database. You also can assign comments and categories to images, organize them, send by e-mail, export to HTML, transfer to other computers, search, sort, print, and more.

You can always find updated Troubleshooting Guide at Cogitum LC Web site http://www.cogitum.com

If you cannot find an answer on your question please contact us by e-mail: co-tracker@cogitum.com.

The following problems are discussed below:

I. Launching the Image Co-Tracker Database

I can’t see the Image Co-Tracker button in the Microsoft Internet Explorer toolbar.

I can't launch the Image Co-Tracker database

My computer runs under Windows 2000/NT. I have installed Image Co-Tracker on it, but the program does not work properly

II. Grabbing an Image

Some images don’t give me a Grab Image option

When I try to grab an image, I see two “grab” windows, but one vanishes quickly

I grabbed an image successfully, but the image catalog contains an empty space (or only part of the image)

A dynamic (animated) image becomes static (motionless) after I put it in my image catalog

My image catalog shows a Cogitum system banner instead of the image I clicked on

I have grabbed a banner ads but another banner was added in the image catalog instead

III. Working with the Image Co-Tracker Database

Why is the image Name set as Untitled?

Why is the "Refers To" field empty?

Some options in the right click drop down menu in the Image Co-Tracker database do not work properly or I have a blank screen after I select one of the options

I can't see images in a catalog but I've seen them before

I can't see images in the exported HTML file

I tried to edit fields in the image catalog, but nothing changed

Launching the Image Co-Tracker Database

I can’t see the Image Co-Tracker button in the Microsoft Internet Explorer toolbar.
The button may, indeed, be missing, or the toolbar may contain too many buttons and the Image Co-Tracker button is “scrolled off” the right-hand side of your screen. To make the Image Co-Tracker button visible:
1. Click on the View menu of the Internet Explorer toolbar, then select Toolbars -> Customize.
2. If there is no Image Co-Tracker icon in the right-hand window, click on the program name in the left-hand window and press the Add button.
3. If there is a Image Co-Tracker icon in the right-hand window, click on it and drag-and-drop it into a position closer to the top of the list.

I can't launch the Image Co-Tracker database
First, check to make sure you have Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher installed.
If you are running Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher and the database still will not run, there may be a problem with the registry. Try the following:
1. Press the Start button.
2. Select Run…
3. Enter regedit.exe in the edit box and click on the OK button. The Registry Editor will appear.
4. Open the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT folder in the left-hand window.
5. Open the htafile/Shell/Open/Command folder.
6. Double click on the value string in the right-hand window. The Edit String window will appear.
7. Enter the following string in the bottom edit box:
Drive:\windir\system\mshta.exe "%1" "%*"
where Drive is the drive on which you have Windows installed (e.g., c:) and windir is the folder name where Windows is installed.

Note: Do not change any other settings in the registry, as you may cause the failure of your operating system.

If you still cannot launch the Image Co-Tracker database, please contact Cogitum at co-tracker@cogitum.com, and we will be happy to help you.

My computer runs under Windows 2000/NT. I have installed Image Co-Tracker on it, but the program does not work properly
If you work under Windows 2000 or Windows NT, you should have administrator's privileges to install Image Co-Tracker. Administrator's privileges mean full control of access to the computer settings. The point is that the program should register itself in the Windows registry, and you should have appropriate rights to do it.

To know what kind of privileges you actually have:

If you work under Windows 2000:

  1. Press the Windows Start button and select Settings / Control Panel / Users and Passwords.

  2. Select your User name (the name you log on with) in the Users list at the Users tab.

  3. Click Properties.Your status will be checked.

If you work under Windows NT:

  1. Press the Windows Start button and select Administrative Tools / User Manager.

  2. Select your User name (the name you log on with) in the Username list at the User Manager window.

  3. Select User Rights option in the Policies menu.

  4. Your status will be selected in the window.

If you ARE NOT an administrator:

  1. Uninstall Image Co-Tracker (if you installed it earlier).

  2. Ask the administrator to give you administrator's priveleges temporarily.

  3. Log on with your regular account (but with administrator's privileges).

  4. Install the program again.

  5. Ask the administrator to put your regular rights back.

  6. Log on with your regular account (which now has its regular rights).

Grabbing an Image

Some images don’t give me a Grab Image option.
Make sure that your mouse is directly over the image. If this doesn’t help, you may be trying to grab something that is not an image. For instance, Co-Tracker cannot grab Flash graphics. Please visit our site regularly to find out about updates to the software. Co-Tracker also cannot grab AOL advertisements.

When I try to grab an image, I see two “grab” windows, but one vanishes quickly.
This may occur if you are using a slow modem. It is not a bug in the Image Co-Tracker program.

I grabbed an image successfully, but the image catalog contains an empty space (or only part of the image).
Some sites display complicated images in “layers.” Image Co-Tracker only grabs the top layer of an image; if this layer is blank, the image area in the database will be, too. However, the associated data are still captured. Similarly, an image on the Internet may actually be comprised of several different images. Image Co-Tracker will grab the part on which the mouse pointer is positioned.

A dynamic (animated) image becomes static (motionless) after I put it in my catalog.
Because of specific of some images Image Co-Tracker saves images in a bitmap (.bmp) format which does not retain the animation.

My image catalog shows a Cogitum system banner instead of the image I clicked on.
If it is impossible to grab an image, Image Co-Tracker replaces it with a standard system banner.

I have grabbed a banner ads but another banner was added in the image catalog instead
It can occur if you find rotated banner ads, i.e. a banner which is replaced with another one periodically. Because of some specific of Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 the replaced banner ads can be added in the catalog instead of the banner you have grabbed. Please visit our site regularly to find out about updates to the software.

Working with the Image Co-Tracker Database

Why is the image Name set as Untitled?
Image Co-Tracker captures the name assigned to the image as it was published on the Internet. If an image does not have a name assigned to it, Co-Tracker uses a default name—Undefined. You can change this (or any) image name at any time.

Why is the "Refers To" field empty?
This field indicates the Internet address of the Web page to which an image refers. Not every image has this kind of reference. In this case, we recommend that you copy the address where the image has been found ("From" field) into the "Refers To" field.

Some options in the right click pop-up menu in Co-Tracker image database do not work properly or I have a blank screen after I select one of the options
Because of some specific of Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 we do not recommend to use Internet Explorer right click drop down menu options in the Image Co-Tracker database. Use toolbar buttons instead. If you have blank screen after you select an option try to press F5. Please visit our site regularly to find out about updates to the software.

I can't see images in a catalog but I have seen them before
Most likely, you moved or renamed this catalog. To see images again, try to move the catalog back to its original location or rename the file back to its original name. To avoid this complication we recommend you use the Save As option to move or rename catalogs.

I can't see images in the exported HTML file
This may be caused by one of two problems:
1. You did not check the "Image" field in the Save in HTML File window. If so, export your category to HTML again and check this field.
2. You used the "#" symbol in the name of your catalog. If so, use the Save As option to rename the catalog, and then export to HTML again.

I tried to edit fields in the Image Co-Tracker catalog, but nothing changed
Remember to press Enter after you finish editing fields.
