Cogitum Co-Citer lets you create collections of texts from the Internet. It automatically captures selected text, its title, Internet address where the text was found, and the date the text is added to the collection. You can also assign comments and categories to the texts, organize them, send by e-mail, export/import, search the collection, sort, print, and more.

I. General Information

Is Co-Citer really free?
Co-Citer is absolutely free for personal and non-commercial use only. If you wish to use Co-Citer for commercial purposes, contact Cogitum LC to obtain a commercial use license. We consider "commercial" purposes to refer to any of the following circumstances:
1. If you are planning to use the product for commercial needs, including integration into your own products or systems.
2. If you are planning to use the product in your workplace for business purposes.
3. If you are planning to use this product on a business network.

II. Security

Does the program collect information from the user’s computer?
No. Co-Citer allows you to collect texts and related information from the Internet in a relatively secure manner.

Does using the program provide protection against viruses or unauthorized access?
Not directly. The only risks in using this program are those that are inherent in downloading any information from the Internet. Viruses are not usually transmitted through text or images, but you should take reasonable precautions to detect any that may arise. Similarly, any program working on the Internet can be subject to unauthorized access, and you should use special software (e.g., firewalls) to prevent such access.

Does the program change Microsoft Internet Explorer settings?
The only change Cogitum Co-Citer does is addition of the Co-Citer button in the Microsoft Internet Explorer toolbar.

III. Software Requirements and Limitations

Can the program work without an Internet browser?
No. Co-Citer is developed to work with citations within an Internet browser only. The current version of the program runs under Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher.

Is it possible to use the Co-Citer collections in an “off-line” mode?
Yes. You can view, sort, or find citations off-line. However, to follow a link or view a page from which you have grabbed a citation or a page a citation refers to, you will need an Internet connection.

Does the program work with languages other than English?
Yes. The program allows you to work with languages supported by your operating system and Microsoft Internet Explorer. You can view and enter all symbols supported by the browser, and you can sort and search information in any language used in the collection.

How many citations will fit in a folder? How many folders can be created?
There are no specific limitations on the number of citations, but very large folders (more than 1000 citations) may require substantially longer processing times, depending on your computer processor and memory.

In addition, there are no specific limitations on the number of folders you can create.

IV. Grabbing a Text

Can I grab text from a location other than the Internet (for example, from my computer locally)?
Yes. However the text you want to grab and place to your collection should be in HTML format. If you have the texts in another formats you should use a special converter.

To grab a text saved on your computer:
1. Launch Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, or switch to the Microsoft Internet Explorer window
2. Select File -> Open...
3. Click Browse...
4. Select the "HTML Files" option in the file type drop down list
5. Select the location of the file and click Open
To grab a text, follow the user manual instructions.

Can I grab links?
No. The current version of Co-Citer does not support grabbing of links.

V. Collections and Folders

What are collections?
A collection is a database of texts and text-related information. You can create an unlimited number of collections at your computer. For example, you can create a collection of news, a collection of famous quotations, a collection of jokes, and so on.

What are folders?
Within each collection you can create specified groups of citations. For example, within a collection of famous quotations you could create separate folders for G. Washington, A. Lincoln, E. Hemingway, and whatever you like.

What is the difference between a collection and a folder?
A collection contains a database of citations (texts and text-related information), and a folder contains specific groups of citations within the collection.

What happens if I delete a folder?
If a folder is deleted, all the citations the folder contains will be deleted too. This will also delete all the subfolders the folder contains. Therefore, you should look through the citations before deleting a folder. If you wish to retain any of them, you can simply move them to a different folder.

VI. Editing the Co-Citer citations

Is it possible to change the "Date Added" field?
No.

Are there any limitations on the length of the "Comment" and "Title" fields?
No.

Is it possible to restore a deleted Co-Citer citations, folders, or collections?
No. Deleted citations, folders, or collections cannot be restored using Co-Citer’s functionality.

VII. Transferring Folders.

What is export?
Export is an operation for transferring the selected folder or the whole collection to a new or existing collection.

What is import?
Import is an operation for transferring the selected folder or the whole collection from another collection to the current one.

Is it possible to transfer Co-Citer collections to other computers?
Yes. Co-Citer provides an export/import mechanism for working with your collections at other computers. To transfer a particular folder or the whole collection to another computer you should export it to a newly created file. Then you can send it by e-mail using Co-Citer features, or copy the file to a disk.

Do I need Co-Citer installed at my computer to work with the collection created at another computer?
Yes. You should install Co-Citer and import the collection you want to work with.

Can I export a specific folder, or do I have to transfer the entire collection?
You can select a folder you want to export in the folder tree. Please note all the subfolders the selected folder contains will be exported. To transfer an entire collection, you should select the root folder.

Can I send my collection by e-mail?
Yes. Cogitum Co-Citer will automatically attach the collection file to your message. As a default, Co-Citer exports the current folder; if you want to export the whole collection, choose the root folder in the folder tree.

How can I change a default e-mail program?
To change the default e-mail program try the following:

  1. Launch Microsoft Internet Explorer or switch to its window.
  2. Select Tools -> Internet Options.
  3. Open the Programs page.
  4. Select another e-mail program from the E-mail drop down list.
  5. Click OK.

VIII. Export to HTML

What is "export to HTML"?
Export to HTML is an operation for converting a folder or the whole collection to HTML format. This allows you to publish your folders or collections as Web pages.

Can I hide particular fields or field names in the HTML file?
Yes. You should check off the appropriate fields in the Visibility Options window.

What is the "contents" of the HTML file?
If you are exporting a folder containing other non-empty folders they will be presented as contents in the HTML file. Each folder containing at least 1 citation will be shown as a hyperlink, i.e., you can view the citations by clicking the folder name. If a folder contains subfolders but does not contain any citations, it will be shown as ordinary text.

How will the citations in the HTML file be sorted?
The citations in the HTML file will be sorted in the same way as in the exported folder.

IX. Searching a Collection

When I do a “search,” what is the area of searching?
The search function looks at the current folder.

What should I do if I don't know which folder to search?
Click the Turn Off Filtering According to Current Folder button. This will show you all the citations you have in the current collection without division into folders. To turn this mode off, click the button again.

X. Working with Group of citations

What is a "group" of citations?
A group of citations is a user-selected group of texts and text-related information. This group can contain any number of citations. The only limitation is the citations must be sequential. .

How do I select a group of citations?
To select a group of citations:
1. Position the mouse pointer anyplace in the first citation.
2. Press the left mouse button.
3. Move the mouse pointer to anyplace in the last citation. The selected text will be highlighted.
4. Release the left mouse button.

What can I do with a group of citations?
You can expand/collapse a group of citations, move it to another folder, print, and delete it.

Should I start selecting from the very beginning of the first citations and finish at the end of the last citation?
It is not necessary. You can start selecting at any place of the first citation and finish at any place of the last citation.

XI. Visibility Options

Can I control how citations are displayed in the collection?
Yes. You can hide or show particular fields, hide or show the folder tree pane, and view your texts with or without having to scroll.
