Troubleshooting Guide

Cogitum Co-Citer lets you create collections of texts from the Internet. It automatically captures selected text, its title, Internet address where the text was found, and the date the text is added to the collection. You can also assign comments and categories to the texts, organize them, send by e-mail, export/import, search the collection, sort, print, and more.

The following questions are discussed below:

I. Launching Cogitum Co-Citer

My computer runs under Windows 2000/NT. I have installed Cogitum Co-Citer on it, but the program does not work properly.

II. Grabbing a Text

Some texts don't give me the Grab Selected Text option.

III. Launching the Co-Citer Collection

I can’t see the Co-Citer button in the Microsoft Internet Explorer toolbar.

IV. Working with the Co-Citer Collection

Why is the "Title" field empty?

I exported a folder (or the whole collection) to HTML but I can't see some folders in the contents of the HTML file

Some folders (subfolders) look like a hyperlink but some of them do not

I was going to print the selected citations only but all the citations printed

I. Launching Cogitum Co-Citer

My computer runs under Windows 2000/NT. I have installed Cogitum Co-Citer on it, but the program does not work properly.
If you work under Windows 2000 or Windows NT, you should have administrator's privileges to install Cogitum Co-Citer. Administrator's privileges mean full control of access to the computer settings. The point is that the program should register itself in the Windows registry, and you should have appropriate rights to do it.

To know what kind of privileges you actually have:

If you work under Windows 2000:

  1. Press the Windows Start button and select Settings / Control Panel / Users and Passwords.

  2. Select your User name (the name you log on with) in the Users list at the Users tab.

  3. Click Properties.Your status will be checked.

If you work under Windows NT:

  1. Press the Windows Start button and select Administrative Tools / User Manager.

  2. Select your User name (the name you log on with) in the Username list at the User Manager window.

  3. Select User Rights option in the Policies menu.

  4. Your status will be selected in the window.

If you ARE NOT an administrator:

  1. Uninstall Co-Citer (if you installed it earlier).

  2. Ask the administrator to give you administrator's priveleges temporarily.

  3. Log on with your regular account (but with administrator's privileges).

  4. Install the program again.

  5. Ask the administrator to put your regular rights back.

  6. Log on with your regular account (which now has its regular rights).

II. Grabbing a Text

Some texts don't give me the Grab Selected Text option
Make sure that your mouse is directly over the selected text. If this doesn't help, you may be trying to grab something that is not exactly a text. For instance, the current version of Co-Citer cannot grab hyperlinks. Please visit our site regularly to find out about updates to the software.

III. Launching the Co-Citer Collection

I can’t see the Co-Citer button in the Microsoft Internet Explorer toolbar.
The button may, indeed, be missing, or the toolbar may contain too many buttons and the Co-Citer button is “scrolled off” the right-hand side of your screen. To make the Co-Citer button visible:
1. Click on the View menu of the Internet Explorer toolbar, and then select Toolbars -> Customize.
2. If there is no Co-Citer icon in the right-hand window, click on the program name in the left-hand window and press the Add button.
3. If there is a Co-Citer icon in the right-hand window, click on it and drag-and-drop it into a position closer to the top of the list.

IV. Working with the Co-Citer Collection

Why is the "Title" field is empty?
Co-Citer captures the title of a text as it was published on the Internet. If a text does not have a title assigned to it by an author, you will see this field empty. You can change this (or any) title at any time.

I exported a folder (or the whole collection) to HTML but I can't see some folders in the contents of the HTML file
Contents section of the HTML file includes all the non-empty folders and subfolders. In other words, if you have two folders containing citations and one folder that do not contain any citations, only the first two folders will be exported to the HTML file and will be shown in the contents.

Some folders (subfolders) look like a hyperlink but some of them do not
Each folder containing at least 1 citation will be shown as a hyperlink, i.e. you can view the citations by clicking the folder name. If a folder contains subfolders but does not contain any citations, it will be shown as an ordinary text.

I wanted to print selected citations, but all the citations printed
To print selected citation s only, choose the "Selection" radio box in the Print dialog box after you select the citations you want to print.
